  • Every year, tens of thousands of infants die suddenly and unexpectedly. Researchers call these deaths SIDS - Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, unexplained death of an infant between the ages of 1 month and 1-year-old that doesn’t have a known cause, even after a thorough case investigation, including performance of a full autopsy with ancillary testing, investigation of the site of death, and review of the clinical history.

  • Most babies who die of SIDS are between 2 and 4 months old, and 90% are younger than 6 months old. Most of these babies appear to have died during their sleep, usually between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m.

  • Globally, it's estimated that around 20,000 babies die from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) each year.

  • Although one-half of all cases are SIDS, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome isn’t the cause of every sudden infant death. There are also cases that include those with a clear cause, such as accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed.
